From the Captain's Chair: Surpassing Records

I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing Thanksgiving with family, friends, and good food. In the spirit of the holiday season, MIASF and Informa Markets are extremely thankful for the exhibitors, government officials, attendees, and staff members who all played a tremendous role in making this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show the most successful show to date. Based on preliminary reports, FLIBS 2021 will be memorialized in the record books of the show’s long 62-year history.

Evidence of a record-breaking year started at the top with the best of the best. The Ocean Alexander 35R, which was crowned this year’s ‘Best of Show’ by an esteemed panel of judges, sold two of this particular model before the close of the show. We anticipate exceeding the previous record set in 2019 of $715 million total sales over the five days of the show ($143 million daily sales).

Once again, we have commissioned Thomas J. Murray & Associates to conduct an economic impact study of the show. He is already busy working to acquire numbers through his survey sent to all exhibitors. Please, take the time to complete this anonymous survey in an efficient manner. These numbers are important and help us with infrastructure and dredge projects as well.

Success at this year’s boat show goes beyond sales and reached every respect including new offerings, attendance, and media exposure. I want to highlight a few specifics that data points don’t always capture.

MIASF worked closely with our elected officials because our impact is present 365 days a year, not just those 5 days at the end of October. Whether we are advocating on behalf of the marine industry, spearheading events that benefit our community, or supporting other industries, we continuously work throughout the year to do what we can to be a positive and reliable partner for Broward County and the City of Fort Lauderdale. A rising tide lifts all boats, so building and maintaining these relationships is vital for us all.

The record boat sales were powered by the continuing influx of new boaters, many of which have also transitioned their residence to Florida. We’ve seen about thirty percent of boat sales going to first-time buyers, and that trend continued at FLIBS.

Attracting new boat buyers is attributed to the world-class media coverage our show receives. For the fourth year in a row, NBC Sports joined us to film, produce, and air a 1-hour special showcasing the best of FLIBS and South Florida’s boating scene to approximately 90 million households. If you missed the broadcast of this year’s special, which aired on the final day of the show, you can watch it on FLIBS’s official YouTube page here. Additional airings will be announced in the coming months as well.

New to this year’s show was Short Shoot TV’s Satellite Media Tour (SMT). MIASF and Informa helped to facilitate the logistics of the SMT so the hosts could broadcast live from the show atop the MIASF Hospitality Lounge. And the results of this live coverage were impressive. Over almost 60 minutes of airtime, FLIBS received national coverage from 12 broadcast outlets including Fox News, CNN, etc., and totaled more than 2 million total views. The coverage and exposure garnered from these live segments would not have been possible without the full support from Visit Lauderdale and Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance.

Of course, this year’s show success was not achieved without overcoming some headwinds. Visa challenges made it difficult for our European participants to travel to the show, shipping supply chain slowdowns lead to an Italian dealer moving in after the show opened, and the cost of goods and inflation also impacts us. Across the board buyers are experiencing 18 to 36-month delivery windows. However, all these challenges combined did not deter buyers, exhibitors, or attendees, and it will go down as the most successful show in history.

In other MIASF news, we are proud to announce the first graduating class from our Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program. Erena Fridman (Derecktor Shipyards), Tai Tran (Bradford Marine), and Andy Camblor (Marine Max, Inc.) are slated to finish the 2-year program at the end of the year. We are very proud of their hard work in the program and their commitment to growing their skill set. We look forward to the great success they will continue to have in our industry.

Enrollment is open for the third class that is slated to start in January 2022. We have more than a dozen companies already participating in the program which is the first of its kind registered in the state of Florida. It is not too late to join them, and we invite you to contact Lori Wheeler for more information and to enroll current employees or new hires in the next class. Programs like this are vital to the continued growth and development of the more than 149,000 jobs comprising our workforce.

Finally, we are participating in this year’s Winterfest Boat Parade. As a founding sponsor, MIASF has been involved with this globally reaching community event since its inception. New this year, in honor of the event’s 50th anniversary, we’re going to also have our own chartered boat in the parade!

Join us for an evening of fun afloat. We have a limited number of tickets available for this private and exclusive experience. Tickets are $150 per person and includes a buffet dinner of prime rib and turkey, an open bar, and an unforgettable night with colleagues and friends. Contact Megan Piggott to get your tickets today before we sell out. I look forward to seeing you there for a night full of fun and holiday cheer.

Regards,

Advocacy Report

Advocacy Report

For the first time in almost two years, travel restrictions to the United States were lifted on November 8th for fully vaccinated international visitors. However, on November 29th, new restrictions for South African countries were introduced in response to the newest COVID variant. Fortunately, the Presidential Order is still in place, overriding these restrictions and permitting yacht crew to continue travel to their vessels located in the U.S.

In preparation for the 2022 State Legislative Session, several bills have been filed that we are monitoring for their impact to the marine industry as they address topics such as boating, waterway safety, and derelict vessel management. Additionally, there are bills filed that address endangered and threatened species classifications as well as sea grass mitigation banks. One final item we are monitoring is amendments to the Yacht & Ship Brokers Act which would refine definitions and structure to the current regulation. We are looking forward to session beginning in January and participating, once again, in Broward Days, a time when constituents meet with their representatives to discuss their concerns and issues.

On November 18th, the Florida Department of Transportation partnered with Broward County to host a New River Crossing Stakeholder Workshop that was open to the public. The purpose of this meeting was to provide a platform to discuss potential alternatives at the new river crossing for passenger rail and it was great to see so many marine industry businesses in attendance. Our collective voice for this matter is critical to ensure the project that moves forward provides a solution that accommodates navigation for boats. No build is not an option as it will stifle the growth of our industry and impede our marine businesses. Many elected officials including Mayor Dean Trantalis, Mayor Josh Levy, Mayor Michael Udine, Vice Mayor Lamar Fisher, and Commissioner Tim Ryan were also in attendance and heard the navigational concerns for our industry. Additional public meetings will be scheduled in the first quarter or 2022 and we will be sure to let you know when the dates are confirmed as it is critical we all remain engaged.

Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program Report

Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program Report

The finish line is in sight to finalize the third class of the Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program, set to begin the program in January 2022. By Friday, December 10th, all employees must have completed the necessary paperwork to become official participants in the program and identify their employee(s) they wish to put through the program.

The apprenticeship program is a 2-year program in collaboration with Atlantic Technical College (ATC) and the Florida Department of Education to create a pipeline and develop a workforce of high-skill/high-wage employees ready to grow within the industry. Throughout the two-year program, apprentices will work full-time with their employee while attending class one night a week at Atlantic Technical College (ATC) in Coconut Creek. Topics covered in the program include: basic electric, general maintenance, hydraulic systems, pumps and plumbing, running gear and machining, shipyard lifting, safety, welding and fabrication, woodworking and carpentry, workplace employability, and yacht painting. Graduates of the program will complete their studies with a basic understanding of a wide range of shipyard skills and competencies.

With the mention of graduation, we are excited to soon be congratulating the first class of apprentices as they ‘walk across their shipyard in a cap and gown’ and receive the recognition they deserve for completing the 2-year program. Andy Camblor of MarineMax, Inc., Erena Fridman of Derecktor Shipyards, and Tai Tran of Bradford Marine represent the inaugural class of apprentices on track to complete the program at the end of the year. Each of these apprentices has loved different aspects of the program to be their favorite and they all have plans to remain with their employer and continue to grow and build their skill set.

As we approach the December 10th deadline to become a part of the program, please visit our website or email Lori Wheeler for additional information or if you have any questions. The program is FREE to join for all employers, with the exception of paying your employee’s wage. The candidates for the program can be an existing employee (s) or new hire and the employer company must be an MIASF member in good standing. Our industry has seen somewhat unprecedented yet tremendous growth this past year, growing as an industry more than 35%. It will take all of us coming together to continue to build the next generation workforce and set our industry up for continued growth and success.

Business Highlight: Lauderdale Marina

Business Highlight: Lauderdale Marina

Boaters new to south Florida recognize Lauderdale Marina as a convenient, full-service marina facility on the ICW. A place where they can fuel up, grab supplies for a day on the water, and even buy a new Boston Whaler if they’re so inclined.

But not every captain that ties up to the impressive 365’ fuel dock knows the rich history of this Fort Lauderdale icon. While today it is the most popular fueling station along the ICW, it once was a lonely outpost that started life as a rickety fueling dock on the site of a closed World War II submarine torpedo research station.

Visiting boaters also may not know that Bob Cox, the former mayor of Fort Lauderdale, was not only the driving force behind Lauderdale Marina as we know it today, but also a strong advocate of turning the city into a marine capital of the world. Three generations later, the Cox family still owns and operates Lauderdale Marina, making it one of the oldest family-owned marinas in Florida.

Today, the marina not only offers the longest fuel dock in Florida, a convenience store, and marine parts and services, but also a Marine Industry 5-Star Boston Whaler dealership, the legendary 15th Street Fisheries restaurant, boat slips, and dock cam - the most popular live view camera in the EarthCam network. Viewers anywhere in the world can check in anytime to see what’s happening on the marina’s fuel dock.

Lauderdale Marina has come a long way since Bob first arrived in Fort Lauderdale in his motorsailer back in 1946. True to the family tradition and Bob’s early vision, Lauderdale Marina has thrived and greatly contributed to Fort Lauderdale’s reputation as the yachting capitol of the world.

Lauderdale Marina is located at 1900 SE 15th Street, Fort Lauderdale. By water, you can find them along the Inland Waterway just north of the Port Everglades inlet at navigation marker #27. The fuel dock and store hours are open 6:00AM to 8:30PM daily. You can also follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

Faces in the Industry: Katie O'Fallon

Faces in the Industry: Katie O'Fallon

Katie O’Fallon – Marine Magnet Coordinator, New River Middle School

Tell us where you are from, what brought you to Florida, and how long you’ve lived here.

It was a bit of roundabout way of getting to Florida. I grew up in Minnesota before heading off to school in New York for marine science. After graduating, I moved to Curacao where I worked at the Curacao Seaquarium doing marine education, research, and diving. I came to South Florida in 2004 working for a dive travel company doing family dive travel with marine programs.  As I was getting my master’s degree at NSU, I started teaching at New River Middle School – Marine Science Magnet Program and then about 11 years ago I became the Magnet Coordinator expanding our Marine Science Magnet Program to include iCAN (Integrated Career & Academic Networks).  Over the years, we have enhanced our programs to ensure all students are learning about not only marine science, but the marine industry here in South Florida and expose them to all the career pathways and opportunities connected to the marine world.

Where do you work, what is your job title, and what does your job entail?

New River Middle School – Marine Science & iCAN Magnet
Magnet Coordinator
I oversee both magnet programs dealing with everything from the curriculum, field experiences, guests, marketing, partnerships, and monitoring for all electives courses from marine science to engineering, robotics, Marine ROV (remotely operated vehicles), broadcasting, entrepreneurship, and more!

How did you initially become interested in the marine industry?

During college, I was able to spend a semester at sea, on a sailing vessel and when I started teaching at New River, I became more involved sharing the marine careers and pathways to my students.  I also was introduced to MIASF through New River’s involvement with Waterway Cleanup and Plywood Regatta.  Through the years, I have joined the Plywood Regatta committee and have supported more opportunities for marine industry exposure for our middle school students such as field experiences, boating safety classes, and programs at the high school level to encourage pathways.

What is your favorite or most valuable benefit of membership in MIASF?

I believe the best part of MIASF is the support it has given to our school and program with field experiences and connecting our students with people in the industry. It is essential for students to start connecting with the members of MIASF so they can see a pathway for them and network because those connections might make the difference for their future.

Describe any other community organizations or events with which you are involved?
I am involved with various cleanup activities including International Coastal Cleanup Day and Waterway Cleanup.  I have also been involved with Plywood Regatta since 2006 and been part of the Plywood Regatta committee for the past couple years.  I have also been invited the last couple of years to be part of Ocean Exchange event.

Tell us about your hobbies and the kinds of things you do for fun.

My hobbies have mostly been surrounding the water from snorkeling, diving, and kayaking to any of the projects New River is doing. ??  I also just enjoy relaxing with a good book and exploring new places in Florida I haven’t been. My favorite time though will always be spent with my family at our cabin in northern Minnesota, again, on the water.

Megan Piggott Presents to Youth Leadership Broward

Megan Piggott Presents to Youth Leadership Broward

Megan Piggott, Director of Marketing & Workforce Development, presented about the job opportunities available in the marine industry, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Salty Jobs, and events and programs throughout the year the students can get involved with now in our industry. Megan was also joined by fellow speakers David Coddington of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance who shared about some of the leading businesses in the Fort Lauderdale community and Scott Moss of Moss Construction who shared insight into his company and the construction industry. The presentation was hosted at Moss Construction for the more than 50 students going through the program.

Youth Leadership Broward is a program open to rising juniors in high school who excel as leaders in the classroom. The program is nine months long and utilizes real-life experiences to introduce the students to a wide variety of community leaders, government agencies, and organizations. MIASF is also excited to take part in this program to meet some of the best and brightest students in Broward County to promote our industry and the myriad of opportunities within it.

This working group brings together a wide range of community leaders invested in skilled trades jobs in a variety of industries to discuss their programs, brainstorm solutions, and collaborate on their efforts to continuously build the workforce. Finally, during this year’s celebration, we were able to share some of the success of YSTAP as Caitlin Cano, Technician Assistance at FHG Marine Engineering shared about her experience during her first year in the program.

Caitlin said, “The MIASF Apprenticeship Program is a brilliant way to bring in new people to the marine industry. I've been working with FHG Marine Engineering for almost a year now performing diesel engine maintenance on yachts and ships. Between FHG and class at Atlantic Technical College, I've learned a lot in a short span of time. I've even been able to use my previous experience as a welder to even do hot work on cargo ships. I love coming to work and love the classes!”

New River Stakeholder Meeting

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) partnered with Broward County to hold a New River Crossing Stakeholder Workshop to discuss alternatives for a new crossing. Stakeholders were all invited to attend this public meeting to discuss different solutions about a new crossing of the New River for passenger rail. This workshop and future decision is vital to continued growth and success of our industry. NO BUILD IS NOT AN OPTION and as the discussion continues to determine a solution, it is important that we all continue to come together and advocate for the option that will benefit continued growth for our industry and local businesses. We are in full support of a 56’ bridge option and, if it is cost and time effective, the tunnel is another viable alternative. It was great to see everyone from our industry who was able to attend and voice our perspective, ideas, and reasoning that supports our industry.

For us, this is one of, if not the largest boat show of the year," CEO and president Tom Slikkers said. “The volume of demand was exceptional. We’re already looking forward to next year’s show and what Tiara has in store for 2022.”

November’s Member Connect was held on November 17th, and was a panel discussion held in The Flagship Room at the MIASF Office. The topic was marketing and we had four panelists as well as a moderator from different marketing specialties sharing their insight and knowledge. Bob Denison moderated the event, and our panelists included: Emily Burchwell (Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center), Kirsten Corssen (Social Navigator), Nicole Golemi (Alison South Marketing), & Matt Ramirez (Informa Markets). We are extremely appreciative of everyone who brought items for our food drive to help the Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center stock their shelves before Thanksgiving. The event was extremely informative, and all of our panelists were able to provide a wealth of information for everybody who attended.

If you're interested in sponsoring a future Member Connect, please contact info@miasf.org for more information.

The MIASF team hopes everybody was able to share a happy and healthy Thanksgiving with family and friends! We look forward to celebrating with everyone at our holiday party, and closing out the year on a strong note.

The US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 38 Plantation is on a mission to educate boaters. On November 13th they held a full boating safety class at the Flagship Room at the MIASF Office. Participants who complete the class will receive their Florida Safety Education ID Card which is recognized by the USCG and NASBLA. Flotilla 38 is committed to providing a monthly safe boating class and alternates locations between the MIASF Office and their base in Plantation. The January class will also be held at the MIASF office and dates will be announced soon once they are confirmed.

Special recognition needs to be given to Pete Gannon for his work with the Marine Magnet Program at New River Middle School. He is teaching the safe boating class to the 6th grade students in one-hour classes once a week. Additionally, he is teaching the 7th grade students and a few teachers through on an online learning platform. Thanks to his efforts and the entire team at Flotilla 38 there are more than 300 new safe boaters.
