Captain's Chair - Making History

We often talk about the incredible legacy of the marine industry in South Florida and acclaim its current importance to and impact on our local and statewide economy. It’s satisfying to tell our story to visitors, residents, elected leaders, and other industries in our community and essential to continue to build opportunities for partnerships and collaboration. What’s even better is when someone else shares our narrative with others, which is why it is very exciting to announce that History Fort Lauderdale has selected MIASF to receive the Legacy Business Award and chosen the Denison Family to receive the Pioneer Family Award at its annual event, History Makers, on March 31st.

The History Makers event commends individuals and companies that have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale and this year marks the first time the marine industry will be honored for its contribution to Fort Lauderdale’s reputation as the Yachting Capital of the World. History Fort Lauderdale has committed to installing a permanent maritime exhibit at its historic museum in downtown Fort Lauderdale and renderings for an all new maritime museum will be revealed at the History Makers event. I sincerely encourage MIASF members to attend in force to accept well-deserved acknowledgment for the decades of prosperity our industry has afforded our collective community. I hope to see you there!

Not all legacies are good ones, however, and the water and sewer infrastructure collapse that has embroiled the City recently is not the fault of the current administration, but is an example of what happens when leaders are not proactive in building capacity increases that align with new development. We applaud the current commitment of the City to answer the need for infrastructure improvements but bemoan the fact that they will be paid for in today’s dollars, as opposed to the prices of years gone by.

Which is why it is imperative that we begin addressing transportation infrastructure now. Almost any project that is in discussion today is 10 years away from completion. Whether it’s our East/West corridors, flyovers for the railroad, or an appropriate sized bridge over the New River, we need visionary elected officials who will make critical, transparent, and accountable decisions on the use of the transportation penny tax, with representation from someone who lives in the City of Fort Lauderdale to serve on the Broward County Commission. While today’s officials may not be responsible for today’s sewer pipe woes, today’s officials will surely be held responsible for tomorrow’s legacy of inaction if they don’t start focusing on transportation infrastructure, like yesterday.

Advocacy Report

Advocacy Report

This month, vice president, Lori Wheeler, and industry liaison, Patience Cohn, went to Washington, D.C. to address several issues of concern impacting the yachting community. Kitty McGowan from USSA and MIASF Member, Deb Radtke from American Yacht Agents, joined the group, along with MIASF lobbyist Duncan Smith. Visits included stops at the offices of Congressman Ted Deutch and Senator Marco Rubio to thank them for their support, which included a joint letter to the agencies requesting the consistent and correct issuance of visas to yacht crew visiting the U.S. on foreign-flagged vessels.

Meetings with the new staff responsible for the yachting community from both the Department of State (DOS) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were very productive and positive. The new assignment of CBP staff is actually a return to a previous person who comes with a strong understanding of the unique transient yachting community. DOS has updated the Field Advisory Manual (FAM) to include clarification of the appropriate visa to be issued for yachts and has also included the topic in their D.C. training sessions for officers in route to a consulate.

Several divisions of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) made time to meet with the team and reviewed the progress that has been made in writing the new regulation permitting the U.S. flagging of recreational vessels over 300 gross tons. The group discussed manning requirements and avoiding unintended consequences and met with the leadership responsible for review and approval of non-tank vessel response plans (NVRP), which currently take up to 60 days and vessels are forbidden from entering the U.S. without an approved plan. Staff asked for the industry to provide data and they would investigate options to facilitate a more efficient process.

All agencies were invited to participate in workshops on May 12th at the American Boating Congress. Members whose business is impacted by DOS, CBP and/or USCG are encouraged to attend this year. The value of meeting these officers and having a contact to call when the need arises will prove invaluable.

The FEC Railroad bridge on the New River is currently operating under a test deviation that assures a predictable opening for vessel traffic for the first 10 minutes of every hour, as well as staying open in the default position when not in use. The U.S. Coast Guard is accepting public comments on the deviation until March 30th. Click here if you wish to submit a formal comment.

Faces in the Industry - Sarah Kelly, co-host of Salty Jobs

Tell us where you are from, what brought you to Florida, and how long you’ve lived here.

I’m originally from Huntington, West Virginia. I came to Florida to attend Nova Southeastern University to play basketball and I’ve lived here for about 2 and 1/2 years.

Where is your major in school and what position do you play on the basketball team?

I'm working on a master’s degree in organizational leadership. On the court, my position is anywhere from a point guard to a forward.

How did you initially become interested in broadcasting and being on camera?

I don’t really remember when I first became interested in broadcasting, but I do know I’ve always been super comfortable on camera and I have an outgoing personality that works pretty well for television.

What is your favorite thing about filming Salty Jobs episode? Favorite thing you’ve done during an episode?

My favorite thing about filming Salty Jobs is always doing something new and exciting. Every episode we get to go experience a day’s work in someone else’s career. My favorite episode so far was Resolve Marine Group, because when we were in the water bunker it felt so real. In this bunker we had to plug all the holes before the water filled it completely. This was really challenging but also extremely fun.

Describe any other organizations or events which you are involved

Right now, the only organization I’m involved in is basketball. We practice every day and have games twice a week, so it keeps me pretty busy. I also created a show called J.A.W.S.S, where I interview student athletes at NSU and get to know them a little better.

Tell us about your hobbies and what kinds of things you do for fun

I love spending time with my dog, Remi. Anything outdoors, hiking, biking, going to the beach, taking photos and making videos. Sometimes I’m a busybody and love to be doing things, but I also definitely enjoy laying on the couch and watching Netflix.

News - Mission of Hope Progress

Mission of Hope, one of our community partners in the ongoing recovery of Hurricane Dorian’s hardest hit areas of the Bahamas, has provided a brief update of their activities on the island since December and we are pleased to share it with you.

For the last six weeks, Mission of Hope has worked on clearing and repairing facilities at Camp Abaco and were able to help the camp begin housing other construction volunteers by mucking out houses, supply buildings, and a chapel, and repairing multiple roofs. They also mucked out two additional buildings and tarped a church roof. They successfully brought a container of supplies from the U.S. to repair another building being used as housing for a family who lost their home in the hurricane. Additionally, they have been volunteering for an after-care program at a church that is doubling as a school and a supply distribution center.

Bradford Marine has entered into an agreement to purchase the Billfish Marina, a repair and marina facility in Fort Lauderdale. The acquisition of Billfish Marina and its affiliated entities, PipeWelders Marine, P&R Canvas, and High Seas Technology, is expected to close in April and both properties will continue operations as normal with the Bradford Marine, Billfish Marina, and other affiliate names intact.

Fort Lauderdale Yacht Harbor COO, Michael Kelly, said the acquisition of Bradford Marine last year allowed the company to start becoming an integral part of the local marine community to help grow the $8.9 billion marine industry economic impact in Broward County, and purchasing Billfish Marina and its affiliated companies reinforces the company’s commitment to that goal.

Did You Know?

Did You Know?

Did you know Sean is leaving? After becoming engaged last year, Sean Smith and his fiancé, Juli, have made the difficult decision to leave South Florida and relocate to the northeast U.S. Sean’s last full day at MIASF was Thursday, February 20th, however he will continue to work part-time until he and Julie are settled. As a native Wisconsinite and life-long hockey player, Sean is looking forward to the change of seasons and Juli’s anxious to get some time on the slopes snowboarding when she’s not healing pets as a veterinarian.

Sean started with MIASF in 2014 as an intern while working on his MBA at Nova Southeastern University. As his role evolved into his current position as director of development, Sean worked tirelessly to elevate the membership and workforce/education committees to impressive levels, with many successful Better Business Lunches, Maritime Mondays, Member Mingles, faculty and B.R.A.C.E. advisor field trips, job fairs, and the creation of the first-ever Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship program at Atlantic Technical College. But Sean’s claim to fame will no doubt be as the host of Salty Jobs, MIASF’s video series designed to attract workers to marine industry jobs and careers. With an inventory of more than 30 of the popular five-minute videos played throughout the Broward County Public Schools, Broward College, at community events, and during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Sean’s smiling face will remain a fixture in South Florida for years to come.

Although we are indeed sad to see them go, MIASF staff and the leadership of the Board of Directors wish Sean and Juli all the best for the future. Please take a moment to wish Sean well when you see him during the coming weeks.
