From the Captain's Chair: The Business of Boating

With the 62nd annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show kicking off in less than one month, we’re in the final stretch to bring another world-class event to Fort Lauderdale. The restaurants, hotels, and other services are excited to welcome the tens of thousands of attendees that visit our show over these five days. And for its 4th year, NBC Sports will be producing their 1-hour FLIBS Special set to air on Sunday, October 31st, the final day of the show. Introduced in 2020, Informa Markets’ AllSecure™ program will continue to ensure the health and safety for all exhibitors and attendees.

Preparing for FLIBS has me thinking about the business of boating. While many of the world’s industries contracted during the ongoing pandemic, the marine industry thrived. Many people ask me how this is possible. In my mind, it is due to three key factors.

The success of our industry is anchored in the customer experience throughout the entire lifecycle of the boater. And boat sales skyrocketed since COVID-19 hit. In fact, our industry enjoyed a 35-plus percent growth over the previous year. Families suddenly found themselves living, schooling, and working in the same residential space. They also discovered that they had much more free time since commutes and extracurricular activities were put on hold.

It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that these families embraced boating. Spending a day soaking up the sunshine on our beautiful lakes, rivers, and the ocean were the perfect anecdote to being cooped up inside the family home together.

The key through it all was, and continues to be, the customer experience. Whether it was the initial experience at the point of sale, requesting advice on maintenance from a dealer or manufacturer, or the service provided on the continual service, we’re there every step of the way, ensuring the customer continues to enjoy boating and follows the trend investing more in our industry.

This increase in boat sales flowed down to buoy the multitude of businesses that support the marine industry. From boat yards, including engine repairs, bottom painters, fenders, etc., to the small businesses that supply the furnishings and parts that keep boats afloat, marine businesses of all sizes enjoyed a bottom-line boost. And their continued financial success helped catch the eye of investors.

Which brings me to the second reason why boating is at the helm of many people’s interest. The boating industry is a Class A investment. Since the pandemic hit, more than $2 billion in acquisitions have been completed within our region, including OneWater Marine’s purchase of Roscioli Yachting Center, Safe Harbor Marina’s acquisitions of Rybovich and Lauderdale Marine Center, and Suntex’s expanded entry to the South Florida yachting scene with their takeover of operations at both Las Olas Marina and the Bahia Mar Yachting Center.

And it isn’t just high-profile mergers and acquisitions like these. Numerous individual investors also embraced the South Florida marine industry. Strong business-minded individuals like Brooks Smith acquired multiple entities including Boat Owner’s Warehouse (BOW), Lewis Marine Supply, and American Custom Yachts (now Willis Custom Yachts) in Stuart. The Kelly’s of Bradford continued to bolt on other business with the addition of Pipe Welders, Billfish Marina, High Seas Technology, and P&R Canvas to their portfolio. It is this confidence displayed by investors at all levels that cements our position as the leader of our industry. Because, keep in mind, the state of Florida leads the nation in registered boats, documented boats, and foreign-flagged boats whether visiting for pleasure or refit, or repair work.

Finally, the third reason our industry is so successful comes down to our people. From industry leaders at the helm of private and public companies, to the skilled tradespeople and everyone in between, our marine workforce is the foundation of our success. And it is a foundation we don’t take for granted. MIASF has always been fully invested in ensuring the next generation of skilled workers is ready to keep the industry moving in a positive direction.

Our Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship program with Atlantic Technical College, the first of its kind registered in the state, welcomed the second class to the two-year program in January 2021, with the third class set to launch in January 2022. A highlight of this program will be congratulating the first class of graduates, set to earn their certificate in December 2021. These graduates will leave the program with a wealth of well-rounded knowledge in multiple shipyard competencies.

And then programs like our Telly award-winning Salty Jobs video series which is now in its 4th season, the annual Plywood Regatta entering its 25th year, or the relationships we’ve forged with local programs and schools such as SBHS Marine Magnet Program, NRMS Marine Magnet Program, Boys & Girls Club, and more, are other ways we do outreach to attract future marine industry tradespeople. We believe it is essential to introduce our industry and pique curiosity early on, so that we continue to have a robust workforce tomorrow and in the coming decades.

Thanks for being part of it all. We look forward to seeing you at the boat show.

Advocacy Report

Advocacy Report

The FLIBS countdown clock is ticking, and our international marine businesses are continuing to address the challenges of the US travel ban which is scheduled to be lifted on a presently unidentified date in early November for fully vaccinated travelers. Those applying for a National Interest Exemption (NIE) should be including why their personal travel to the US is an economic benefit to the US. Examples are, included but are not limited to, looking to open a US office or manufacturing site or negotiating a significant contract with a US vendor to provide their product in an internationally manufactured product. Should NIE not be approved the option to reside in a non-banned country for 14 days before entry into the US is an alternative for those with determination to still attend FLIBS. Those arriving by yacht continue to be permitted under the air and sea crew exemption.

The FEC bridge has been conducting repairs over the past couple of months, some scheduled and some that have been surprises. Fortunately, the repairs have primarily been conducted overnight and have not presented a significant impact to navigation on the New River.

A coalition of progressive organizations and unions have launched a six-figure campaign to garner more support in the Senate for the Pro Act. Currently only 47 Senators have signed on to sponsor the bill, far short of the 60 votes needed to pass. The bill includes strict restriction on 1099 workers and does not permit business to use 1099 workers in a same or like business. We continue to closely watch this bill and the impacts to our marine businesses.

The public meetings introducing the options to cross the New River as well as the proposed Broward Stations for the commuter rail service were conducted early this month. A coalition of businesses including the Marine Industries Association of South Florida submitted a letter of support for a bascule bridge at a height of 56’ as the best option to solve New River and Broward Boulevard impact concerns. Currently they are conducting a second vessel traffic study on the New River and we are confident the results will support the absolute need for a bridge higher than 25’.

MIASF is hosting a Global Commerce reception during FLIBS onboard the MIASF Hospitality Lounge. This is an opportunity to meet with Department of Commerce representatives, various international countries’ representatives and our marine businesses that are already conducting business overseas. MIASF members will receive an electronic invite with details shortly.

Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program Report

Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program Report

Fall has arrived and the apprentices in the Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program are busy working through class projects while working full time at their respective marine businesses. The apprentices are growing daily from a combination of classroom projects and challenging on-the-job training.

The Class of 2021 is quickly approaching graduation in December. They are finishing up their final projects and lessons in the woodworking module before moving onto the painting module. To finish up the program, the apprentices will conclude with the metal fabrication/welding module. A welding teacher at Atlantic Technical College is stepping in to provide 4 weeks of top-quality instruction for the apprentices.

The Class of 2022 is now finishing the running gear and machining module of the course. Rich Merhige, from Advanced Mechanical Enterprises, Inc., returned to present to this year’s class about his knowledge and expertise related to running gear and machinery vibration analysis.  Rich’s presentation gave an overview of shafts, shaft seals, struts, bearings, rudders, props, and more.  The apprentices also all took a field trip to Rolly Marine where they finished the running gear module by gaining first-hand experience learning the steps involved with disassembling, aligning, and installing a drive shaft. We thank Rolly Marine and Advanced Mechanical Enterprises for their continued support and involvement in the program.

Recruitment to build the Class of 2023 is already underway. Classroom instruction for this group of apprentices begins in January 2022 and is limited to 25 students. Space is filling up, so if you would like to enroll one of your current or future employees in the program, the time is now to take the next steps. Currently, there is no additional cost to the employer to put an employee through the program, with the exception of the employees’ wages. And CareerSource Broward is still offering their wage reimbursement program for employers to obtain reimbursement for employees’ wages that meet the qualifications in the program. If you have identified a current employee or new hire that you would like to enroll in the program, become a participating employer today by emailing info@miasf.org or call 954-524-2733.

The only way we continue to build our industry’s workforce, is by investing in the next generation together.

Faces in the Industry: Jim Hopgood

Faces in the Industry: Jim Hopgood

Tell us where you are from, what brought you to Florida, and how long you’ve lived here.

I was born and raised in the greater NYC area. I came to South Florida in the early 1980's and bought my first Florida based boat- a 22' Seyler with a 200 HP Merc Black Max. We loved coming down to Florida so much we built a second home in Jupiter. We frequently visited Fort Lauderdale and subsequently sold our vacation home in Jupiter in 1997. We have had a condo here in Fort Lauderdale for the last 15 years.

Where do you work, what is your job title, and what does your job entail?

My professional career was based in NJ. I built an insurance agency and sold it and permanently moved out of NJ to Fort Lauderdale. My practice specialty was developing employee benefit programs for associations. A few years ago, I was chatting with a fellow boater at our marina who owns the oldest insurance agency in Fort Lauderdale, The John Galt Insurance Agency. I had time on my hands and asked the agency owner, Jim Rudd, if I could build out the agency's employee benefit department as the Benefits Division Manager. He said sure thing. Being surrounded by marine based mostly smaller employers, it occurred to me that the trade association servicing that sector is one worth looking into. That is when I met the MIASF. The association said they would be interested in seeing what I could put together that could benefit most of the association members. I, along with other professionals I had relationships with over the years, developed a medical insurance program for MIASF members that was endorsed by MIASF late last year. My associates and I have enjoyed working with members to help them better achieve their goals- either through savings or benefit improvements, or both.

How did you initially become interested in the marine industry?

I have been boating since I was a teenager. Mostly in smaller lake boats. The first boat I owned, and still do to this day, is a 1960 16’4” Century Resorter ski boat with a Fireball Marine Inboard motor. But now we live in the biggest marine community in the country and live on the Port Everglades inlet where we can witness the latest and greatest crafts on a daily basis. In my prior insurance career I dealt with state Dental Associations, Bar Associations, Tourism Associations, etc. Truth be told, I so much prefer dealing with MIASF members. Great people with incredible skills who appreciate our work.

What is your favorite or most valuable benefit of membership in MIASF?

Medical Insurance is a concern for nearly all members. Besides it's high cost, those that use it rely on it to perform as advertised. We have assisted members who thought they could not afford coverage/obtain coverage. For others, we have saved enough money for the employer to expand their retirement program. MIASF members look for the association to help them attract and retain good employees. As a MIASF member, I am pleased and proud to be a part of that effort.

Describe any other community organizations or events with which you are involved?

After permanently moving to Florida and buying a boat slip condo at The Port Marina on 17th Street, I ran and was elected as a board member of the 125 boat slip marina. I then became the President of the marina condo board for the last 6 years. A position I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Tell us about your hobbies and the kinds of things you do for fun.

There are few things my family and I enjoy more than boating in South Florida. In addition, we enjoy beach walks and the many things life in Fort Lauderdale presents. From trying new restaurants to going to hear live bands, to my every day walk over the 17th Street bridge, I thoroughly embrace all that Fort Lauderdale has to offer. My wife and I are also grandparents and are waiting for our second grandchild to arrive in November. We look forward to creating more memories with our extended family in South Florida.

Member News: 25th Annual History Makers Fundraiser

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, has set the date of Saturday, October 30, at 6:30 p.m., for its 25th annual History Makers fundraiser at the Superyacht Pavilion facility on the south grounds of Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina (2150 SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale). The special event, taking place during this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, will honor the Denison Family (Denison Yachting), Broward County yachting industry forerunners, with a History Makers Pioneer Family Award to be accepted by Bob Denison and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) CEO Phil Purcell will accept a Legacy Business Award for the organization’s 60+ years of industry and service at the event that commends individuals and companies who have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale.

“In our 25th anniversary year, we are pleased to honor the enormous contributions of both the Denison Family and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, two forces who continue to shape and guide our prosperous seafaring leisure economy and tourism industry,” said Patricia Zeiler, executive director of History Fort Lauderdale. “The marine industry is the second largest industry, now, in the state of Florida and the largest employer in Broward County. It’s through the hard work and dedication of our honorees that our great city continues to enjoy its status as ‘The Yachting Capital of the World.’”

Denison Yachting (formerly Broward Marine) and its workforce were largely responsible for much of the marine industry that developed over the course of their 50 years of yacht construction that started on the south fork of the New River in Fort Lauderdale. In 1948, on their honeymoon, Frank and Gertrude Denison decided to buy a boat yard on the New River and shortly, thereafter, became the largest employer in Broward County, as well as the largest defense contractor in Florida. The contracts they secured for the construction of US Navy minesweepers during this time period led to the construction of large motor yachts. The Denison’s yachting business, launched in the early 1950s with the construction of the largest yacht built in the US, post WWII, the ALISA V, eventually led them to become most prolific large yacht builder in the world in 1993. The first of only two yacht builders in the US to have received this recognition.

The Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF), now celebrating its 60th anniversary, is the largest marine trade organization in the Southeast United States. It is dedicated to promoting, protecting, and growing the 121,000 middle class jobs in Broward County and 149,000 jobs regionally in marine businesses promoting boating lifestyles from family cruising and fishing to yachts and the goods and services that sustain them, driving the economic output to $9.7 billion in Broward County and $12.5 billion regionally. Created in 1961, the nonprofit trade group is focused on the sound growth of the marine industry in the South Florida Region to benefit its members, their customers, communities, and the environment. The Association has over 400 members in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties and is the owner of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Through the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, advocacy efforts, programs, and services of MIASF have combined to raise the professionalism of the industry and awareness of its impact and contributions by the public, elected, and regulatory officials at the local, state, and federal levels. Members have fostered a reputation for the region to be known as the goods and service center of the world for the yachting and marine community.

Previous History Maker honorees have included The Forman Family, “Alligator Ron” Bergeron, City Commissioner Steven Glassman, developer Dev Motwani, H. Wayne Huizenga, Chris Evert and Jimmy Evert, The Sun-Sentinel, Winterfest and Susan and Buddy Lochrie.

History Fort Lauderdale’s 2021 History Makers fundraiser is presented by Lauderdale Marine Center, Roscioli Yachting Center and Ocean Wine & Spirits. It is sponsored by Bradford Marine with additional support from Derecktor, Engineered Yacht Solutions, Hudson Family Foundation, JM Family, Lank Oil, Lauderdale Marina, Lawless, Edwards & Warren, Moore & Company, Nautical Structures, Pantropic Power, Rybovich, Tripp Scott, Ward’s Marine Electric, Westport Yachts and Westrec Marinas.

Tickets for this year’s 25th anniversary History Makers fundraiser are $100 (online service charges not included) and can be purchased online or via email at info@flhc.org. Tickets are limited.

“Fort Lauderdale’s waterways are and always have been elemental to the success of our great city,” said Patricia Zeiler, executive director of History Fort Lauderdale. “This year is such an important milestone in showcasing the accomplishments of those innovators and businesses who contributed to making Fort Lauderdale a renowned worldwide yachting and vacation destination. We’re pleased to highlight their accomplishments through this ‘Making Waves’ exhibit, our annual fundraiser and our new permanent History Museum maritime exhibit.”

History Makers, commending individuals and companies who have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale, will take place on Saturday, October 30, at the Superyacht Pavilion at Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina.

Brownie’s Marine Group, Inc., a leading developer, manufacturer and distributor of tankless dive equipment and high-pressure air and industrial compressors in the marine industry, today announced that it has completed the acquisition of Submersible Systems, Inc. (“Submersible Systems”), a manufacturer of lifesaving breathing systems based in Huntington Beach, California.

Submersible Systems produces Spare Air, a redundant air system that is currently being sold by BWMG with its multiple diver surface supplied air diving systems and currently anticipated to be sold in the near future with the recently launched BLU3 Nomad systems as good safety diving practice. BWMG estimates that most Nomad units will eventually be sold with a Spare Air system, BWMG believes may result in an increase in sales of Spare Air.

“We are excited to partner with the management team of Submersible Systems, which has a long history of providing life-saving equipment and is the perfect addition to our portfolio of companies. This is the first acquisition we have made since we began a strategic initiative to find companies that have unique technologies and manufacturing know-how in the industrial and recreational aquatic industries, and is the perfect size for a first transaction”, said Chris Constable, CEO of Brownie’s Marine Group, Inc. “Submersible Systems had revenue of approximately $1.8M in 2019 reduced by the effects of COVID on their customer base in 2020 to $1.4M. We believe that their balance sheet is strong, and they have excess capacity that will provide a warehousing or production advantage on the west coast.”

“Among the many things we liked about Submersible Systems was that they have been in business for approximately 40 years making quality products in the United States, just like we do here at Brownie’s,” said Robert Carmichael, Chairman of Brownie’s Marine Group, Inc. “They are also a U.S. government approved contractor, making life-saving devices that are relied upon by many militaries around the world, which will allow the combined entities to leverage combined technologies and expand the US government footprint of product offerings.”

Member News: Cliff Berry, II Receives Golden Compass Award

For more than 20 years, Cliff Berry II has dedicated his time and passion to Seafarers’ House. This year, the native Floridian and life-long Fort Lauderdale resident was honored with the non-profit organization’s prestigious International Golden Compass Award.

Berry is President and CEO of Cliff Berry Inc., a Fort Lauderdale company founded in 1958 that offers environmental services. He has been on Seafarers’ House Board of Directors since 1999. He currently serves as the board’s vice president.

Twenty years ago, Berry’s father, Cliff Berry, Sr., was the recipient of the Golden Compass Award, which recognizes those who have achieved distinction in the maritime industry, those whose vocation or avocation has been the sea, or those who have ministered to or otherwise assisted seafarers.

“My father founded our company six decades ago and grew it into a nationally recognized powerhouse that I now have the privilege to lead. He dedicated his life to Port Everglade’s maritime community. It is such a privilege and honor to be able to follow in his footsteps in receiving this award,” said Berry.

Cliff Berry Inc. and the family generously gave a lead gift to the Place of Welcome Campaign to build the new Seafarers’ House in Port Everglades. They provide in-kind, volunteer and financial support year-round to ensure the organization’s ability to offer practical and spiritual care to as many as 150,000 seafarers who come to Port Everglades annually. The company also has supported Seafarers’ House as a Gold Sponsor of the Golden Compass Awards Gala, as well as sponsoring the annual South Florida Business Leaders Luncheon. The company and its employees also have been long-time supporters of Seafarers’ House annual Shoebox Christmas, donating and wrapping items for mariners who come to Port Everglades during the holiday season.

“The Berry family’s support of Seafarers’ House has been instrumental in our ability to serve Port Everglades maritime community, especially during these most difficult times,” said Seafarers’ House Executive Director Jennifer Stewart. “We are grateful for the family’s decades-long generosity, which has had such a positive impact on the lives of our seafaring community.”
