A March 14th Florida Department of Transportationkick-off meeting for the New River Pedestrian Crossing was abruptly cancelled on March 6th after the much-maligned project received an overwhelmingly negative response from the community, the marine industry, and the Fort Lauderdale City Commission. The brief memorandum sent to property owners and other interested stakeholders cancelled the scheduled kick-off meeting and any continuation of the Project Development and Environment Study, ending further progress for the project. MIASF’s vocal opposition to any additional impediment to the safe navigation of the New River helped to influence the decision and created the opportunity to continue the conversation regarding the need for infrastructure improvements to accommodate the additional commuter rail along the FEC Railroad corridor.
