At the 34th annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, which was held from March 28th through March 31st, attendance increased by more than 6.7
percent over last year, continuing an upward trend. Through a charitable campaign in collaboration with Bennett Auto Supply, Informa Exhibitions, and the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County raised more than $22,000 for local charities. Fans who purchased a $28 boat show ticket during the month of March at any local Bennett Auto Supply received a second ticket free, with proceeds donated equally to Loggerhead Marine Center and Sheridan House.

On April 7th about 144 captains, crew, and industry representatives took to the greens for the annual Yachty Nationals Invitational Golf Tournament hosted by National Marine Suppliers. Thirty-six teams took over the Orangebrook Golf & Country Club in Hollywood, Florida to raise money for the Broward County Waterway Cleanup. Chef Neil Ashley of M/Y Black Sheep, Bosun James Mercer of M/Y Mucho Mas and Captain Dudley Salt of M/Y Elysian won The Triton swing speed contest using jumbo marshmallows. Southern Yacht Industries and Virgin Yachts teamed up to donate a 2019 Chevy to the player who was ‘closest to the pin without going in.’

Westrec Marinas’ announced that founder and CEO, Michael Sachs, died in his home in California on April 11th. Mr. Sachs was a CPA and an attorney who served as executive vice president and general counsel of Public Storage from 1982 to 1990. He conceived the idea of storing boats in the same manner as
people’s goods in 1987 and formed Westrec Financial, Inc. Cards and remembrances may be sent to Westrec, 16633 Ventura Boulevard, Suite 600, Encino, California, 91436.

Pier 66 Hotel and Marina has announced that beginning on June 10, 2019 the hotel will be temporarily closed and room and event reservations will cease as of June 9, 2019, as well as all hotel amenities including the pool and spa. Tavistock Development Company’s plans to revitalize the property are moving through the approval process at the City of Fort Lauderdale with construction projected to take approximately two years to complete once it begins. It’s important to note the Marina, Pelican Landing Restaurant, and Grille 66 will remain open throughout the approval and construction phases. Members are invited to attend an Open House meeting in the Crystal Ballroom on Thursday, May 9, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., featuring project consultants who will be on hand to answer questions on the proposed redevelopment plans, known as the DRC North Project. Parking will be complimentary.

Shawn Berg, vice president of information technology has been promoted to Chief Digital Officer of MarineMax. Berg joined the company in 2017 and previously worked for JM Family Enterprises for 24 years, a multi-billion-dollar company focused on the automotive industry.

Congratulations to Bob Roscioli, who was honored with the Town of Davie Humanities Heritage Award on Sunday, April 28th during the historic Inaugural Davie Jazz, Arts, and Humanities Festival for his legacy of setting the benchmark for the highest quality craftmanship, and being a mentor and an inspiration to many businesses within the Town of Davie, the state of Florida and around the world.

After several months of negotiating, Derecktor Shipyard has signed a 30-year lease agreement, with three 15-year renewal options, to develop a yacht refit and repair facility on a 12-acre parcel of property in the port of Ft. Pierce. Derecktor Ft. Pierce (DFP), as it will be called, will accommodate yachts of about 200 feet or more. DFP is expected to include a 1,500-ton lift and a drydock, as well as over 1,000 linear feet of deep-water dockage and a drydock for vessels up to 4,000 tons by the fall of 2020. DFP also has plans to work with Indian River State College to start a yacht repair training program.

Derecktor is now certified to install press connections and pipe runs using Viego ProPress and MegaPress fittings, valves and flanges in approved yacht systems. The Viega Group is a global manufacturer of pipe fitting installation technology. Products include Viega ProPress for copper and stainless, Viega also specializes in the design, production and installation of ProRadiant heating and cooling systems and offers in-wall flushing technology, including carriers and flush plates.

MIASF extends its sincere congratulations to The Triton on its 15th Anniversary and 180th issue of Nautical News for Captains and Crews. As publisher Lucy Chabot Reed wrote in her recent column, in the age of the 24/7/365 news cycle, it’s a testament to the value of the content and ongoing readership of The Triton that it continues to be a meaningful publication in the marine industry.
