The first in-person apaprenticeship workshop took place last month as part of the safety training program. The team from Fire Ranger, an MIASF member, shared its extensive knowledge with the apprentices and gave them hands-on experience with fire equipment.

In July, apprentices attended an interactive scaffolding workshop at Derecktor with OSHA instructor, Dennis Morgan, prior to attending an evening class at the MIASF office. The apprentices have received six unique topic textbooks to date, and this month they discussed some of the chapters, reviewed the scaffolding workshop information, and completed a second workshop on measuring devices, such as veneer calipers and micrometers. Each student has been assigned to create a resume over the next month and the class will finish the Employability portion of the program after completing resumes and career portfolios. The next module to be addressed is rigging. The Crosby Group, a professional rigging company that also provides training, is scheduled to present. Greg Snyder, the mentor from Derecktor, will contribute his certified training skills to lifts, cranes, forklifts, and scissor lifts. Derecktor Shipyards will be providing the equipment and venue for these classes. Students will be able to receive certification, but first must complete additional hands-on training and practice.
