Although the 25th Annual Plywood Regatta was unfortunately cancelled due to severe weather on the day of the event, we were fortunate with the support of our sponsors of the event to still be able to award our 2022 Plywood Regatta Scholarship Recipients. To be eligible for a scholarship, the graduating senior must be in good academic standing and the mission of the funds is to support their post-secondary education plans as they pursue careers in our industry. This year, the two recipients of the Plywood Regatta Scholarships were:
· Andrew Price (Cooper City High School) – Will be attending the University of Florida for Mechanical Engineering, sponsored by Stanley Yacht Services
· Alex Valdes (Nova High School) – Will be attending Purdue University for Electrical Engineering, sponsored by Engineered Yacht Solutions
We wish both of these outstanding students the best as they pursue their degrees and know we will see them doing great things in the future.
Additionally, the Plywood Regatta Scholarship Fund awarded the New River Middle School Marine Magnet Program with a scholarship to enhance their learning and provide them more opportunities to utilize resources, provide hands-on learning experiences, and support their field experiences. Megan and Noah from MIASF surprised Katie O'Fallon, Magnet Coordinator, and the students of the program when they visited their school to distribute event t-shirts and look ahead to next year's event. The Marine Magnet Program at New River Middle School is one that MIASF works closely with throughout the year and supports all of their initiatives that drive their mission of exposing and teaching their students about the marine industry and the opportunities within it. This scholarship award was sponsored by the Winterfest Foundation.
