WWCU volunteer profile – Arnie Beard, Beard Marine March 18, 2015
Throughout the year we will spotlight volunteers who have gone above and beyond to help MIASF achieve its goals. This month’s spotlight is on the Waterway Cleanup.
A self-proclaimed “tree-hugger,” Arnie has helped out at the Waterway Cleanup for the past 18 years.
Correia, an installation manager at Beard Marine, has more than 25 years’ experience in the marine industry. Correia, who spent 26 years in the Navy, started volunteering with the cleanup when it was just a small group of volunteers at John U. Lloyd Beach State Park. Beard Marine has been an MIASF member since 1983.
This year, Correia volunteered at Derecktor. This is also the 10th year that Beard Marine has been involved. Beard, which provides marine air conditioning and refrigeration services, provided hot dogs and burgers after the cleanup for the students who participated.
“I believe in volunteering,” says Correia, who moved here from Portugal in 1969. “You have to give back. This country has given me so much.”
Correia also volunteers with the turtle program at John U. Lloyd in June and July. “Cleaning the waterways once a year is not enough,” Correia says. “I would like the mayor to make a proclamation that we should clean our waterways the first week of every month. People don’t have to wait all year. I’m hoping people do more.”
