As a participant in Leadership Broward Class XXXV, Lori Wheeler, MIASF Director of Operations, is bringing awareness to lung cancer and National Women’s Lung Health Week, May 8th – 12th, with a Broward County Turquoise Takeover, where individuals, organizations, and businesses incorporate turquoise into clothing, window displays, and even buildings illuminated with turquoise lights. Suggested Turquoise Takeover activities from the American Lung Association include hosting a turquoise dress-down day, posting 10 photos on social media using #TurquoiseTakeover, holding an office-wide costume contest incorporating turquoise, decorating your office/storefront with turquoise, and selling Lung Force paper icons for a small donation. The company that garners the most participants or raises the most money will be recognized at a special Lung Force Luncheon on Friday, May 19th.
Statistically, lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of women and men in the United States, and the number of women dying from lung cancer each year has nearly doubled over the past 30 years. Every five minutes, a woman in this country learns she has lung cancer, which affects smokers and non-smokers alike.
MIASF members who have already signed up to participate include, Lauderdale Marine Center, Bahia Mar Yachting Center, Maritime Professional Training, Advanced Mechanical Enterprises, Ward’s Marine Electric, Roscioli Yachting Center, Land n Sea Distributing, and The Triton.
