Popular billfish tournament returns December 22, 2015
The 51-year-old Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament, one of the biggest and most popular events for local anglers, is returning in 2016 to the local boating community as more than just a fun and competitive tournament, but one that benefits the community and the ocean.
With the tagline ‘Fish for Fun. Fish for Good.’, the Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament, which is owned by the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, will be held on February 27, 2016 at the Bahia Mar Marina. The event will benefit the Marine Industry Cares Foundation and sponsors such as the Miami Marlins have signed on to support the event and marine program.
The event will feature a Captains Meeting & Kickoff Party on Thursday, February 25 at the Captain’s Lounge at Bahia Mar Marina and Awards Reception & Dock Party on Saturday, February 27 following the weigh-ins on the Bahia Mar docks.
“In addition to competing and having fun, the Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament is a great opportunity to raise money that will help local children and families and benefit oceanographic research and conservation, ” said Phil Purcell, executive director of MIASF.
The tournament combines the marine industry’s commitment to the community with its passion for the oceans and promise of preservation of the local waterways and the seas for fishing and boating. Entry fee for the Family Fun division is $500 and $1,000 for the Big Boat Billfish division.
The Marine Industry Cares Foundation helps children and families in need in the community by supporting organizations such as Kids In Distress and Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center, and through programs such as its creative arts summer camp scholarship program and its marine summer camp.
Additionally, the MIASF and FLBT are partnering with The Billfish Foundation, which has a tag and release programs and other education initiatives, and the tournament will award a scholarship to a local oceanographic research institution.
