Message from the Chairperson June 28, 2017

My term as Chairperson of MIASF has been both personally rewarding and professionally fulfilling. I want to thank the Executive Officers, the Board of Directors, and all MIASF’s members and community partners for supporting the many exciting annual events and successful initiatives that have been accomplished during my time in this leadership role.

The marine industry’s $11.5 billion impact is well recognized by the public and elected officials at all levels of government. I am pleased that our public events engaged our local community and allowed us to share our message of the powerful impact the marine industry has on the local, regional, and state economy.

Whether it was the Waterway Cleanup resulting in the collection of tons of trash from inland waterways throughout Broward County, the Plywood Regatta introducing students to the marine industry by having them build vessels in teams and compete to see which team’s boat performed the best, Marine Industry Day attracting 2,500 visitors to dozens of interactive and educational exhibits, or joining efforts with Habitat for Humanity to help build a home for two families, we continued to strengthen our relationships within the communities we effect. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show continues to exceed expectations year after year, and attracts more than 100,000 visitors from around the world, boosting the Florida economy by $857.5 million.

Other notable accomplishments include the execution of a 30-year agreement with Show Management, the passage of legislation creating the tax cap on refits and repairs, completion of the Intracoastal Waterway dredge from 10 feet to 17 feet, applying for and receiving the first recreational boating Foreign Trade Zone designation in the U.S., updating and streamlining the association by-laws, and the launch of an innovative educational video series called Salty Jobs that has begun to showcase the breadth of marine industry career opportunities. Additionally, successful faculty field trips, popular Member-Mingles, and informative Better Business luncheons have kept our members engaged and connected.

I have truly enjoyed serving MIASF in this capacity, and appreciate the constant support of Phil Purcell and the MIASF staff, who assisted in making my term exciting and memorable. I look forward to staying involved and remaining on the Board as the Immediate Past Chairperson.

Sincerely,
Danielle Butler
