Lauderdale Marine Center, owned by Dr. Selvin Passen and Morio Moto, has been purchased by The Carlyle Group for $147 million. Carlyle, a publicly traded global asset group, plans to continue operating the 60-acre facility as a boat yard.
MarineMax has hired Carey McKearnan as regional marketing manager for its Florida East region, which covers the area from Daytona Beach south to the Keys. McKearnan previously worked at companies including JES Publishing and the Sun Sentinel.
The Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi has added a new stop at Bokamper’s, just north of Oakland Park Boulevard on the Intracoastal Waterway. Bokamper’s will be stop No. 12 on the water taxi’s Fort Lauderdale route.
Global communications firm EMC has acquired MTN Communications. The new entity provides remote connectivity to approximately 8,000 on-land sites and 1,600 vessels. EMC is excited “to further expand modern connectivity to remote locations at sea, on land and in the air,” founder and CEO Abel Avellan said.

HMY Yacht Sales has added a new office in Key Largo in the Ocean Reef resort community, and it will be led by Captain Glenn Clyatt. The office will represent the company’s new yacht brands of Viking Yachts, Princess Yachts, Horizon Yachts and Arcadia Yachts, as well as offer brokerage yachts and services.
Pierson Grant Public Relations has promoted Daniel Grant and Marielle Sologuren to vice presidents of the firm. Grant has been with the firm seven years and heads its marine division, promoting five of Florida’s largest boat shows, including the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, and Sologuren joined the firm five years ago and provides services to clients in the healthcare, legal, marine, real estate and travel industries.
Former MIASF president George Elliott Pascoe has passed away. Pascoe was president from 1976-77 and also served as president of the National Association of Marine Surveyors, chairman of the Fort Lauderdale Marine Advisory Board and on the board of governors of Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Institute.
Joe Purtell, who retired this year after spending his entire career at Interlux Yacht Paint, will be taking a motorcycle trip across America’s northwest covering Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota (for the 75th anniversary of Sturgis), Idaho, Montana, British Columbia and Alberta, Canada, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. He will be back in time for next year’s Plywood Regatta on April 9 and 10.
New summer office hours
During July and August, the MIASF office will close at 4 p.m. The office, at 2312 S. Andrews Ave., will be open as usual at 8:30 a.m. Monday-Friday and still close at 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday.
