MIASF extends congratulations to Yacht Décor, Inc. as it celebrates its 40th Anniversary! Yacht Décor was founded in Miami in 1978 by Betty Cordle, who began working in interior design at Richard Bertram and Company. When her business took off, Betty opened a second location at Marina Bay, which was a very popular site at the time, and ultimately moved the whole operation to a stand-alone building near Griffin and Ravenswood roads, where she employed about a half dozen people.
Betty’s daughter, Dana, who is the current owner and has been directly involved with the business for the past 13 years, recalls spending time at the shop as a child with her sister, organizing fabric books, filing, and lugging bags of custom-fitted sheets, which were all the rage then, and still are. As a one-stop-shop for wall coverings, upholstery, floor coverings, window treatments, lighting, and art, Yacht Décor’s scope of work has remained consistent over the years, except for one thing – the size of the vessel. The threshold for what constitutes “big” has gone from about 60’ in the 1970s to now any vessel over 150’.
Betty built her company with integrity, exactness, and a strong work ethic, which she instilled in her children, as well. When Dana was replacing wallpaper for a project that Betty originally designed 30 years earlier, she was amazed to find a hand-written note on the wall, saying “if any questions, call Betty” with the same phone number she has to this day!
A 40th Anniversary celebration will be planned for April, and Betty is expected to take a break from her happy, healthy, retired life in North Carolina to attend. Although she is not actively involved in the business operations, she continues to provide guidance and insight and answers the occasional phone call from someone who still has her number.
