Meeting Details Benefits of Habitat Participation January 15, 2015
As we start the year, one of our goals at the Marine Industries Association of South Florida is to raise awareness of the importance of the marine industry, the economic backbone for our region, and the role it plays in our community. One way we’re doing that is by sponsoring the construction of a duplex near downtown Fort Lauderdale for two local families through Habitat for Humanity to help build a stronger community.
At our member meeting on January 15, 4:30-6:30 p.m., the keynote speaker was Roger G. Metcalf, the Habitat for Humanity Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair and the chief financial officer of Sunbeam Television Corporation, the parent company of WSVN Channel 7, which has participated in the tax credit program through Habitat for Humanity for the past 10 years.
With the project breaking ground this month, Metcalf explained how your business can get involved and benefit from giving back to the community by contributing toward the home’s construction. The meeting was at the International Game Fish Association’s headquarters in Dania Beach, and the presentation was followed by a networking reception.
The tax credits are available under the Community Contribution Tax Credit Program, a state program aimed at encouraging private donations to housing and community development projects. The tax benefits include a tax credit of up to 50% of the value of the donation against the Florida Corporate Income Tax or the Florida Insurance Premium Tax or a sales tax refund of up to 50% of the value of the donation for donors collecting and remitting Florida sales taxes to the Department of Revenue. Eligible donations include cash and tangible goods.
The home-building project also offers a valuable team-building opportunity for your organization from now through August. Corporate groups can be anywhere from 7 to 30 people, and volunteer opportunities are available from 7:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. every Tuesday-Saturday. Contact us at 954-524-2733 to arrange a time for your group to participate.
