Marine industry’s Habitat home going up in Fort Lauderdale July 22, 2015
On Aug. 8, supporters of MIASF’s Habitat for Humanity house in Fort Lauderdale will have the opportunity to raise the trusses for the first time.
MIASF members who are sponsoring the house include Maritime Professional Training, Frank and Jimmie’s Propeller, Neptune Boat Lifts, High Seas Yacht Service, Ward’s Marine Electric, Advanced Mechanical Enterprises, National Marine Suppliers and Denison Yacht Sales.
This is also the first time for Habitat that the volunteers will be able to pitch in at this stage of the construction. The two families who are helping build and will be living in the duplex, the Benefield-Askins family and the Coney family, will both be in attendance as well.
“Since the marine industry plays such a leading role in South Florida’s economy, we believe it’s important to lead and support our community,” said Phil Purcell, MIASF executive director. “Our members are passionate about the area they live and work in and committed to reinvesting in their community and making it a better place to live.”
The marine industry also plans to build at least two additional Habitat homes next year, with the hopes that at least one will be for a veteran with Mission United. Most businesses are finding that due to a combination of deductions and a special tax credit program, donations end up costing only a fraction of the actual value.
Team building opportunities will be available in the coming months as well – for more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
