Marine Industry Day celebrates creation of marine hub to the world June 18, 2015
To celebrate the marine industry’s contribution to the region of 136,000 jobs and $11.5 billion economic impact, the second annual Marine Industry Day will take place this Saturday, June 20, from noon to 6 p.m. at Esplanade Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Local country music phenomenon Amber Leigh, who was named South Florida’s “Female Entertainer of the Year” for four consecutive years, is the headliner and will perform a free show at 4 p.m.
Leigh, who resides in Delray Beach and has appeared numerous times on local network affiliates including NBC, CBS and FOX, has shared the stage with many of the top names in music, including Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Toby Keith, Sugarland, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley, Britney Spears, Lady Antebellum, Christina Aguilera, Leeann Rimes and the Dixie Chicks.
Leigh will perform with her world-class band that combines the flavors of country, pop and Celtic for a high-energy show that brings audiences to their knees. She is known for her musicianship on fiddle, guitar, mandolin and vocals.
The family-oriented event includes fun, interactive experiences with numerous marine-related activities, children’s areas, live music and popular food trucks. The festivities include a pirate adventure, propeller drag races, water taxi tours, miniature train rides, casting lessons, antique motors and much more. The food trucks include Nacho Bizness, Mobstah Lobstah, Joji, Waffle Pops, Killer Melts, Legends BBQ and Bite Gastrotruck.
This year’s event will recognize the region as an international marine hub that includes renowned oceanographic research institutions, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the presence of the world’s third largest reef off our coast and Port Everglades, as well as the region’s vibrant recreational marine industry. With easy access to the East Coast, the Caribbean, Latin America and Central America, the region has become the envy of coastal communities worldwide.
New River Middle School, South Broward High School, Broward College, Broward Technical College, Nova Southeastern University, CareerSource and MPT will provide information about education, training and jobs available in the marine industry.
If you want to thank you employees or reward them for all their hard work, Marine Industry Day medallions are available to purchase. The tokens, worth $5 each, can be redeemed at the event at any of the food trucks. The medallions also will be the only form of payment accepted at the event for T-shirts or beer at the antique fire truck, and they will only be sold in advance. And MIASF members get 10% off! Call 954-524-2733 or stop by our office at 2312 S. Andrews Ave. if you would like to purchase any medallions.
The Marine Industries Association of South Florida is hosting the annual event with support from the Florida Yacht Brokers Association, as well as the U.S. Superyacht Association, Young Professionals in Yachting and Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale. It is free and open to the public.
