From the Captain’s Chair: The 59th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show October 26, 2018

The Fourth Annual South Florida Business Journal (SFBJ) Special Marine Section was released last week at a special event held at MIASF offices, and I hope everyone has taken the opportunity to read it. This special section, which includes a list of marine-based companies by revenue and/or employees that many other industries have participated in for years, is an important indicator of the success and strength of the marine industry in South Florida. As we continue to advocate for our industry and for improvements to our local communities and the region in the form of transportation and infrastructure needs, the SFBJ special section highlights the size and scope of our industry and helps us convey our message to its readers, many of whom are business and community leaders and elected officials.

If you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, click here to view the online version. If you didn’t respond to the survey this year, I strongly encourage you to do so next year.

I’m sure many exhibitors are in the process of making final preparations to participate in the 59th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, while many others are buying tickets and VIP packages to ensure they and their customers can experience the best of the largest in-water boat show in the world.

MIASF is busy, as well, finalizing all the details and arrangements for the many events, meetings, and parties onboard the MIASF Hospitality Lounge, which will be at Bahia Mar Face Dock Purple Zone 12. This year, we will also accommodate 880 The Biz Radio onboard with live interviews and unique business insights related to FLIBS, as well as the camera crews and commentators of NBC Sports Network as they film aspects of the show for a one-hour special that will air in December.

We are excited to host NBC personalities Townsend Bell, Will Christien, and Leigh Diffey for the first year of our three-year contract with NBC Sports Network to produce a special television show showcasing FLIBS. As part of this exciting opportunity, we’ve created some additional events within FLIBS, like the ‘Best in Show’ award for debut vessels with special judges Francois-Xavier Hotier, president of award-winning watchmakers Ulysse Nardin; Jeff Mihalic, president and CEO of Delta Private Jets; Jose Suarez and Charles Sieger, architects of luxury high-rise residences like the Porsche Design Tower in Miami; and Fabien Cousteau, aquanaut, ocean conservationist, and documentary film-maker. Additionally, a spectacular trophy designed by world-renowned industrial designer, Derek Jenkins, will be presented on-camera to the winner.

There’s also a Wine Enthusiast Award for Best Yacht Chef, which will be determined at an iron chef style competition held on Thursday, November 1st at Pier 66, featuring television personality and restauranteur, Ingrid Hoffmann, as MC and celebrity judges NBA Allstar Alonzo Mourning and Wine Enthusiast contributing editor Nils Bernstein.

You will see improvements to the entranceway that will enhance the visitor experience and a new food vendor, Proof of the Pudding, that will elevate food choices and catering options.

As always, the MIASF Hospitality Lounge is a daily respite for members and their guests to enjoy lunch and network with each other. Please don’t hesitate to contact the office if you need to purchase tickets or have any questions.

We look forward to seeing you at the show!
