From the Captain’s Chair: New Year, New Changes, Same MIASF December 20, 2018
As 2018 comes to a close, I hope that you and those closest to you had a healthy and happy year. Many of you may have heard me say on occasion that I like to “use the windshield, not the rearview mirror”. But one of the great things about December is that it’s both an ending and the herald of a beginning, a natural break to take stock of where we’ve been, where we’d like to be this time next year, and how we plan to get there.
MIASF is in great shape heading into 2019. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show was an enormous success, and our partnership with Informa is stronger than ever. Our other events, the Broward County Waterway Cleanup and the Plywood Regatta, will start coming together beginning in January, and a revamped Marine Industry Day will be announced soon after. The MIASF Board of Directors has shown great leadership throughout the year, and the association’s various committees remain actively engaged in many facets of the community.
I think you will agree that one of MIASF’s greatest assets is its team – a small group of dynamic and dedicated individuals who are collectively committed to promoting and protecting marine industry businesses and workers, as well as making progress and effecting change. After much thought and discussion, MIASF’s staff members will be moving to a four-day work week. Starting next month, each team member will work four 10-hour days. The office hours of operation will remain the same, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and there will be no interruption of services provided.
As technology advances continue to disrupt the status quo in so many areas, it’s important for the association to remain flexible and evolve with ever-changing opportunities. As the world weans itself of the need for brick and mortar buildings to conduct business, work/life balance has become more important than ever. This workday adjustment should allow the MIASF team to optimize the time they spend in the office as well as the time they spend at home with their family.
I hope you have a wonderful holiday celebration and I look forward to seeing you in the new year!
