From the Captain’s Chair: 58th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show October 31, 2017

We are in the final countdown to opening day of the 58th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show! With this year’s extremely active storm season, we are very grateful to have been spared to the degree we have, and fortunate to be able to continue to assist people in other areas of Florida, Texas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands who are still in the recovery process. It is important to acknowledge the willingness of the marine industry to offer support with a kind and generous spirit wherever and whenever it’s needed.

Out of this season comes the biggest boating event in the world, which triggers economic activity in the South Florida region for the entire year. The show provides an opportunity for the newest merchandise to enter the market place as well as pre-owned product to change hands. It stimulates commerce for everyone from surveyors, engineers, and attorneys, to electricians, plumbers, and welders. The work, like haul-outs, refits, and repairs, spurred while vessels are in town benefits hundreds of companies and helps support the careers of the 136,000 employees in this region who work in the marine industry.

Nothing happens until someone sells something; a transaction has to take place in order to enact commerce. As we know, FLIBS generates a whopping $508 million in direct sales during the five days of the show. That’s over $100 million a day! No other event, not even a Super Bowl, contributes that level of economic activity to a community. The show remains an important catalyst for our industry to thrive. The cumulative business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) transactions that occur during the show create an enduring value throughout the year and often influence a large percentage of a company’s bottom line.

Remember, FLIBS is your boat show. As a member of MIASF, you can and should be proud of the continued growth and progress experienced by the number one boat show in the world. Be sure to stop by to relax at the MIASF Hospitality Lounge located in Purple Zone BC13 at the Bahia Mar Face Dock, where a buffet lunch is served every day, and special events are scheduled throughout the days of the show. Contact the office for additional details or to purchase lunch tickets.

Looking forward to seeing you at the show!
