Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament, in its 49th year- Set for February 27 – 28 December 12, 2014
MIASF and Nova Southeastern University (NSU) are partnering again to present the 2015 Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament, which combines a commitment to preserving the seas, cash prizes, a mandate of the release of billfish, responsible take of fun fish, and funding for scholarships for students at NSU’s Oceanographic Center for studies on fisheries, coral reefs, and the marine ecosystems.
The Tournament begins with the Kick-off Party and Captain’s Meeting on Friday, February 27 at the NSU’s Guy Harvey Oceanographic Center Building. The fishing tournament, weigh-in and an Awards Reception will be held on February 28 at Bahia Mar. The tournament promises to be a fun-filled event for anglers and marine science enthusiasts.
The Billfish event has a history of being a great time for a very important cause. This year’s scholarship recipient, Ph.D. student Matt Johnston, researches the spread of marine invasive species in the Caribbean basin using cellular automata and agent-based computer models. The work has already yielded fundamental insight into the voracious spread of lionfish through this delicate ecosystem and resulted in numerous scientific publications.
