Captain’s Chair: The Fort Lauderdale Boat Show October 25, 2016

This month’s message is all about the upcoming 57th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show! As anyone would expect, the #1 Boat Show on the Planet takes a tremendous amount of planning, and welcoming 100,000 people to our town takes a lot of coordination among many organizations and agencies. MIASF and Show Management have collaborated throughout the year to bring new and exciting amenities to this year’s show, with an air conditioned Sailfish Pavilion, an improved Windward VIP experience at the International Swimming Hall of Fame, a completely revamped and upscale food court, enhanced security measures, additional and more affordable parking options, and an incredible new entranceway designed and created by local artist Emily Pinnell. The Coral Reef Pavilion, hosted by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, Starmark, and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, will present a daily schedule of fascinating underwater research being conducted by several South Florida universities, with special guest speakers, contests, and giveaways.

During FLIBS, we are proud to be hosting three special events onboard the MIASF Hospitality Lounge that illustrate our reach and connectivity within the local, national, and international community. In furtherance of our long-term goal to have South Florida recognized as a Global Marine Research Hub, the university presidents, John Kelly of Florida Atlantic University, George Hanbury II of Nova Southeastern University, and Mark Rosenberg of Florida International University have agreed to meet to discuss marine research advances and creating collaboration among researchers. The Business and Industry Leader Panel Discussion, held during our annual marine hub luncheon, will feature President/CEO of JetBlue Airways, Robin Hayes, CEO/Co-Founder of Modernizing Medicine, Daniel Cane, and Former CEO of TradeStation, Salomon Sredni, who will discuss the economic impact of international trade and business on South Florida’s economy. We are pleased to welcome the Italian Ambassador to the United States, Armando Varricchio, to FLIBS for an intimate meeting with our local elected officials. Yachts are Italy’s number one export, and with 23.7% of the market, Italy is considered the world’s leading exporter of boats and yachts.

Just in time for the boat show, the South Florida Business Journal (SFBJ) published the 2nd Annual Marine Industry Special Section, highlighting and showcasing the marine industry with focused articles, personal interviews, and “The List”. The SFBJ Lists are a critical component to creating a detailed picture of the corporate, professional, and industrial segments of South Florida. Subscribers to SFBJ are CEOs, bank executives, entrepreneurs, investors, and professionals who refer to The List an average of 19 times throughout the year. The List illustrates our shared impact, yet still has the potential to effect everything from bank loans to exit strategies. Thank you to all the businesses and individuals who took the time to submit the revenue and employee details that support our $11.5 billion impact and 136,000 regional jobs.

Members should have received in the mail two one-day FLIBS tickets and two tickets for the daily buffet luncheon, which will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. onboard the MIASF Hospitality Lounge located at the Bahia Mar FACE Dock. Members can purchase additional lunch tickets in advance through the MIASF office or onsite at the MIASF Hospitality Lounge for $30 each. Non-member tickets are available for $35 each. Members and guests are also welcome to take advantage of the cash bar available onboard every day from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. MIASF Members are invited to board the MIASF Hospitality Lounge anytime during show hours to meet with clients, use the Wi-Fi, or just relax and network with fellow members.

Not only is FLIBS MIASF’s biggest event, it is known as the largest in-water boat show in the world with a statewide economic impact of $857 million. We look forward to seeing everyone at the show!
