Captain’s Chair: Job Fair to feature career, educational opportunities September 22, 2015
Following in the footsteps of last year’s successful inaugural job fair, hundreds of jobs with over 25 companies will be up for grabs at the second annual Marine Industry Job Fair. The job fair will take place during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, from 1-7 p.m. on Nov. 5 at the Greater Fort Lauderdale-Broward County Convention Center.
More than 400 people attended last year’s inaugural fair, which offered over 400 openings in the more than 110,000 marine industry jobs in Broward County and 136,000 in South Florida.
The free event will feature more than 25 leading marine industry companies, from both the private and commercial sectors, representing commercial and recreational positions including skilled trades, sales, administrative and crew as well as educational opportunities. Job-seekers will also receive helpful job search, interviewing and career tips.
Some of you may have heard that Palmer Johnson in Wisconsin announced recently they will be laying off 100 employees. We’ve reached out to them to let them know about the job fair and the opportunities that may be available for those employees. B/E Aerospace in Wellington also announced that they are laying off 450 employees, and we have reached out to them as well.
Participants in the job fair include Tradesmen International, High Seas Yacht Service, Rolly Marine, Parker Yachts, Maritime Professional Training, MarineMax, RPM Diesel, TowBoatUS, Crew Unlimited, Bradford Marine, Thomas Marine Systems, Pantropic Power, Nauti-Tech, Reverse Osmosis of South Florida, Flagship Management, Loggerhead Marina, Jerry’s Marine Service, Frank and Jimmie’s and more.
We’re also talking to Broward College and McFatter Technical School, both of whom will also be at the job fair, about developing marine internship programs, and have reached out to several members to learn about their internship or apprentice programs. Chris Hart, CEO and president of CareerSource Florida, will speak at a press conference and will provide resources for job seekers as well.
And we’re exploring ways to work with Sounding Trade Only to create more exposure for our job board.
