Billfish tournament offers pro, family fun divisions February 24, 2016
The return of the Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament, which is scheduled for February 27, 2016, will feature two divisions appealing both to professional anglers and amateurs in the local boating community. The Pro Division is for anglers who regularly compete and are seeking a more competitive challenge, and the Family Fun Division allows boaters who enjoy fishing with their kids to participate for fun in a less competitive environment.
The 51-year old event owned by the Marine Industries Association of South Florida is more than just a fun and competitive tournament, but one that benefits the community and the ocean. With the tagline ‘Fish for Fun. Fish for Good.’, the Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament, which will be based out of Bahia Mar Marina, will benefit the Marine Industry Cares Foundation and The Billfish Foundation.
“In addition to competing and having fun, the Fort Lauderdale Billfish Tournament is a great opportunity to raise money that will help local children and families and benefit oceanographic research and conservation, ” said Phil Purcell, executive director of MIASF.
The tournament will feature a Captains Meeting & Kickoff Party on Thursday, February 25 at the Captain’s Lounge at Bahia Mar Marina and Awards Brunch on Sunday, February 28 at Bahia Mar Marina. Tournament participants can win cash prizes and awards, enter raffle drawings for marine products and services donated by several local marine businesses, and bid on prizes in a silent auction. Based on an estimate of just 20 boats entering the tournament across the board, cash prize payouts may total more than $40,000.
Several sponsors have signed on to support the tournament, including the Miami Marlins, RPM Diesel Engine Co., Advanced Mechanical Enterprises, Denison Yacht Sales, Bahia Mar Marina, Johnson Pump, Boat Owners Warehouse, Starbrite, Atlas Trax, Tropic Ocean Airways and Tito’s Handmade Vodka.
