Waterway Cleanup – March 4, 2017

The Annual Waterway Cleanup, now in its 40th year, is one of Broward County’s largest and longest-running environmental events. Held every March, in 2016 nearly 1,500 volunteers of all ages by land and more than 100 boats worked at 30+ locations at canals and waterways across the county to remove 22 tons of trash and debris from our waterways. You do not need a boat to participate! The cleanup is followed by the Trash Bash, with food, drinks, door prize and live music.

The event is organized and sponsored by MIASF and the Marine Industry Cares Foundation with support from the Florida Inland Navigation District as well as numerous other local businesses, government agencies, and civic organizations. For more information, visit www.waterwaycleanup.org.

Plywood Regatta – April 1-2, 2017

The Plywood Regatta, in its 21st year, is a two-day boat building and racing event that introduces students to our industry by having them build vessels by working as a team and then competing to see whose vessel performs the best. Thirty teams of South Florida middle school, high school, technical school and college students will attempt to build sea-worthy vessels the first day using simple hand-tools and only the supplied materials of plywood, 3M 5200 fast-cure caulk and zip ties. Then the students paint and decorate them with their own theme. On the second day, the students compete in a fun-filled and friendly rivalry when the finished boats race in a series of heats to determine which boats actually are seaworthy and which boats exude that sinking feeling!

All Plywood Regatta proceeds benefit South Florida’s marine industry education programs and the Plywood Regatta Scholarship Fund. The aim of these programs is to encourage students to pursue careers in the marine trades, maintaining South Florida’s talent cluster as the global leader for service in the recreational and yachting segments of the marine industry.
