Legislative Advocacy
MIASF carefully monitors, comments, supports or challenges government regulations or legislation that it has determined may have an impact on South Florida's recreational marine industry on the local, state and national levels. The Government Relations Committee, Board of Directors and the Association's government relations representatives in Florida's capital Tallahassee and in Washington D.C. are focused on a wide variety of issues to ensure that marine businesses are protected, or can benefit from governmental policies or actions.

MIASF is the Proud Owner of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show
MIASF is the owner of the largest boat show in the world. The show focuses a spotlight on our South Florida marine industry, and brings thousands of qualified buyers to the area each year - MIASF's ability to lead an aggressive and innovative agenda on behalf of the membership and industry is in part as a result of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
Member Referrals
It is the Association's policy to provide a Membership Directory or a list of names of MIASF members when specific requests are received for products or services. MIASF is a membership driven association, so we listen to our members' needs, encourage business-to-business interaction and help the public find the products and services of Association members.

Recent Achievements and Initiatives

Florida Sales/Use Tax Cap
MIASF partnered with the Florida Yacht Brokers Association in 2010 to help gain legislative approval of an $18,000 sales/use tax cap on vessels purchased in Florida as a sales and job stimulus.

Florida 10-90-180 Boat Tax Exemption
In the 1990's and again in 2009, MIASF led an initiative to allow vessels purchased in Florida by non-residents the opportunity to temporarily stay in the state to utilize local repair facilities without incurring a sales tax liability.

Longshore Insurance Exemption
At the federal level, MIASF spearheaded the effort to amend the Longshore and Harborworkers Compensation Act to exempt the recreational marine industry from this duplicative and costly insurance requirement, which stifled job creation and made it challenging for marine businesses to remain globally competitive.

Marine Master Plan
As part of the critical analysis of the industry needs and recreational boating conditions, MIASF is developing a Plan for the future to identify the needed infrastructure to ensure that boating is a vibrant and fun family recreation in South Florida.
